Actually during the seventeenth century there was a system of registered vendettas. This is a short, Japanese play translated into English which is often referred to as the Forty-Seven Ronin. But not only that, at the same time it’s full with love, fights, betrayal, braveness and sacrifice – a compelling story to read even nowadays. There were little to no stage directions in my edition, so actually seeing what was happening was way more compelling than just reading lines.
Lord Hangan is ordered to kill himself as punishment. Fuji and, as a marriage procession passes by, Konami watches enviously, thinking that in better times she herself would have ridden in just such a grand palanquin. The Japanese military and most audiences found the first part to be too serious, but the studio and Mizoguchi both regarded it as so important that Part Two was put into production, despite Part One’s lukewarm reception.
The title means ” Kana practice book Treasury of the loyal retainers”. This traditional virtue, as exemplified in Chushingura, has never completely lost its hold on audiences, in spite of twentieth-century changes in Japanese society and moral ideas.
All the more amazing when one considers this play was written for puppets–yet not the puppets we imagine from our Sesame Street childhoods; if you are serious about reading the play, take some time to study the theatrical aspects of the puppetry.

It’s definitely of its time and it reads like a novel but it’s also incredibly exciting. Gihei refuses to allow them to open one of the chests of weapons and armour, even threatening to kill his own son to allay their suspicions.

An entertaining read and my first “peek” into Japanese writing. They wanted a ferocious morale booster based upon the familiar rekishi geki “historical drama” of “The Loyal 47 Ronin”. Confucian classics and the Bakufu law may have seemed to compliment each other to allow revenge.

It is a must. What follows is a long and very emotional discussion about the righteousness of this behavior and this play is part of it. I stayed completely enthralled, but then again, I have been studying Japanese literature all quarter and had read the play, so I knew what was happening. The league, needing to amass weapons and armor without raising suspicion, vets a merchant named Gihei. It is interesting to read a play that comes from not only a completely different value system, but also a completely different theatrical tradition. They have all gathered to find and present a special helmet at the shrine and it is Hangan’s wife, Kaoyo, who is the one to identify it.
