However, I did not feel very confident of my ability as a reader to comprehend this mountain of a novel, so I found a companion volume that had annotations, written by a university professor, of course.

A Guide Through Ulysses. The introduction and headnotes to sections provide general geographical, biographical and historical background. Okay, maybe I don’t remember this stuff as well as I thought. Seidman Limited preview – Hippopotami do not wade the Irish coast waves.

It is definitely “full of surprises” but not in the sense of a novel being full of surprises. The suggestive potential of minor details was enormously fascinating to Joyce, and the precision of his use of detail is a most important aspect of his literary method.
